For years, many Americans explained away this gap.

The firewall has been breached.

We want to minimize the distance. We want to contract that gap.

So it could be bridged in infinitely many different ways.

But this is the world we have today, no longer any gap.

Lying is an attempt to bridge that gap, to connect our wishes and our fantasies about who we wish we were, how we wish we could be, with what we're really like.
