This is how We penalized them for their inequity.

Thus did We requite them for their rebellion.

That we awarded them for their rebellion.

As such We recompensed them for their transgress ions.

By that We repaid them for their injustice.

That is the penalty We imposed on them for their disobedience.

Thus do We (instil) fear in them but they only transgress the more.

And We frighten them, but it only increaseth them in exorbitance great.

We warn and make them afraid but it only increases them in naught save great disbelief, oppression and disobedience to Allah.

We frighten them, but that only increases their defiance.

We go about warning them, but each warning leads them to greater transgression.

We warn them, but it increaseth them in naught save gross impiety.

We warn them, but it only increases them in their outrageous rebellion.

And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.

Even though We warn them, it only increases their rebellion.

We warn them, but this only increases their insolence.

And He leaves them blundering in their transgression.

He leaveth them to wander blindly on in their contumacy.

He leaves them in their insolence, wandering blindly.

And He leaves them in their transgression, wandering blindly.

Thus We requited them for their rebellion, and verily We are the Truthful.

We requited them with that for their rebelliousness, and We indeed speak the truth.

Thus, did We recompense them for their rebellion and We are certainly truthful.

Yet they did not differ about it until knowledge came to them, through rivalries among themselves.

And they did not differ until after knowledge came to them, through mutual jealousies.

And they differed not except after the knowledge had come Unto them, through spite among themselves.

And they divided not till after knowledge had come to them, through selfish transgression between themselves.

And they differed not until after the knowledge came to them, through envy among themselves.

They became divided only after knowledge came to them, out of resentment among themselves.

They fell into dispute only after knowledge came to them, out of mutual rivalry.

They did not split up except after knowledge had come to them, and then only because they wished to commit excesses against each other.

Yet they differed among themselves (not out of ignorance but) after knowledge had come to them and they did so out of the desire to commit excesses against one another.

And they differed not until after the knowledge came unto them, through rivalry among themselves.

But they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves.

Yet they became divided only after knowledge had reached them from their own insolence.

And they did not become divided until after knowledge had come to them out of jealous animosity between themselves.

And they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them out of jealous animosity between themselves.

Only after receiving the knowledge did people divide themselves into different groups because of rebellion among themselves.

Only after having received knowledge did they create differences among themselves because of their rebelliousness.

They became divided only after knowledge had reached them, out of mutual jealousy.

It was only after knowledge came to them that they differed among themselves out of mutual rivalry.

And they became divided only after Knowledge reached them, through selfish envy as between themselves.

But We leave those, who look not to encounter Us, in their insolence wandering blindly.

So we let alone those who hope not for the meeting with Us, wandering in their exorbitance perplexed.

So We leave those who expect not their meeting with Us, in their trespasses, wandering blindly in distraction. (Tafsir At Tabari Vol.
